Hi Reader, We are in the thick of summer and although it’s hot (hella hot in some places), the general vibe is to relax and enjoy some of the summer chillness, right? But I am hearing a lot from clients and friends that although you may be on vacation and taking things a bit slower, there still seems to be an underlying feeling that something is just...off. And this can apply anytime, not just when it's summertime. Maybe it's on the weekends, or when you're supposed to be relaxing when getting a massage, facial or manicure. That's you time you should be happy and zen, or so you're told. Well, if it were only that easy. Maybe you've spent so many years taking care of everyone else that somewhere along the way, you realize (or not!) that you may have lost touch with yourself. Whether it's your family, career, children, partner or simply the never-ending demands of life, you've spent so much time making sure everyone else was okay that you no longer know what makes you happy. You've stopped asking yourself what you need, what you love and what makes you feel alive. If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. I totally hear you. The women I work with, speak to and meet all tell me the same story, just with different details. The minute I hear it, my ears perk up because that's exactly where my work begins. I don't intentionally take photos for this share but when I finally see them together, I think, "How fun!" There's always a theme, and I realize what a great week I had. So thanks for giving me a place to share it. This week was about all kinds of celebrations. And beauty too, because feeling great is its own kind of beauty, remember? :) The obvious one was my friend Bridget's birthday in an amazing space, Gilgamesh. Not just for its story, food and wine, but for the American-style, grade-A air conditioning. We had no idea the venue was air-conditioned, and watching each guest's face as they walked through the door was priceless. It wasn't even as hot as last week's heatwave! So yes, we celebrated Bridget. And modern Western amenities. There was also a birthday celebration at my local Chinese restaurant, where the exuberant server presented the cake while singing Happy Birthday in Chinese. What a star! And how can I not mention France's world cup win last night where they beat Morocco 2-0, sorry Maroc :( The set-up may seem quite banal for the everyday Parisian, but each time I walk down the street before a France match, I'm tickled pink seeing scores of people lined up in rows around an outdoor screen, no matter what the temperature, and hearing them sing La Marseillaise before kickoff or whatever they call it hehe. Then forget it! After each goal, people are cheering, honking horns, setting off firecrackers. And I didn't watch the match. I just kept track of the score from the joyous noise coming through my windows. And it wasn't just in my hood, as friends texted me saying the same thing was happening outside their windows! Ah, Paris. Then there were my more unusual wins. I found my favorite yogurt topping at Aldi (Paris's version of Trader Joe's), so I stocked up. And we stumbled upon a couple of neighborhood cafés, including a beautiful Taiwanese tea house that completely hit the spot. Don't you love their little egg cakes? Just pure beauty. What are you celebrating this weekend? Big or small, just do it. xo Follow us on social media! |

Hi Reader, Last week, I received many concerned messages from friends and family in the US. They saw the news headlines about the protests in the streets of France and wondered, is Susan ok? Rest assured, I am ok. There’s definitely something about living in France that keeps you on your toes! One minute you can be admiring the beautiful architecture, enjoying your café and the next minute, there’s a passionate political debate or a “manifestation,” aka protest just winding around the corner....
Hi Reader, Three years in, I'm discovering the difference between loving a culture and living in it. Paris, ah Paris. I moved back here 3 years ago, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, confident to take on my new world and life. I mean, I spoke pretty fluent French, knew which utensil was used for what course or animal/vegetable/other, and I already had French friends. It was an easy slam dunk, right? Omg, so wrong. As a Feng Shui consultant, I've spent years helping people understand how their...
Hi Reader, Is it as hard for you as it is for me to take time off? I'm back from 5 weeks away from my newsletter and blog writing duties. I was travelling for work, taking personal time off to go to the US Open as well as visiting family. Even though I am surrounded daily by a slower paced Parisian rhythm, the NYC hustler in me can't stop muscling her way in. Not thinking about work and you guys was at times a struggle. As I love what I do for a living and it's woven into every fiber of my...
