Paris is in turmoil. What about you? (ritual included)

Hi Reader,

Last week, I received many concerned messages from friends and family in the US. They saw the news headlines about the protests in the streets of France and wondered, is Susan ok?

Rest assured, I am ok.

There’s definitely something about living in France that keeps you on your toes! One minute you can be admiring the beautiful architecture, enjoying your café and the next minute, there’s a passionate political debate or a “manifestation,” aka protest just winding around the corner.

Ah, Vive la France!

But it got me wondering: how often do we have our own little protests going on inside us, even when everything looks perfectly fine on the outside?

I do admire that my French compatriots certainly know how to make their voices heard. And while I won’t get into politics here, all this unrest has got me thinking about a different kind of turmoil, and how, of course, it applies to Feng Shui and your world.

Public unrest and personal turmoil aren't the same thing, of course. But both can reveal something that has been simmering beneath the surface.

In Feng Shui, I see your outer environment as a reflection of what's happening within you. This has been my Feng Shui philosophy since...forever.

Your environment is always telling you everything you need. If you don’t listen, it will start screaming, just like what happened last weekend in the streets of Paris.

And be sure to read to the end of the blog for a little Autumn Feng Shui ritual to bring fresh color, feeling and energy into your space. And, ahem, it features a Good Housekeeping article where yours truly contributed a few words of wisdom 😉 Let me know what you think!

Personal note from Susan:

Wow, what can happen in 2 weeks!

There can be so many ups and downs in life and we beat ourselves up about how poorly we think we are handling it all. I look around and see so many things happening all at once - unrest in the beautiful city that I love - student protests and overall countrywide protests - but at the same time so much joy and beauty are being created around us. Turmoil and joy - life is funny that way, eh?

These past couple of weeks have held space for lovely moments: birthday celebrations (joyeux anniversaires Catherine et Matthieu <3 !), attending an amazing concerts by a new-old band called Fat Freddy's Drop who knocked my socks off, finding dark chocolate-covered McVities cookies at my local supermarket, seeing signs for the reopening of historic stages and feeling the joy that continuing to design and care for my apartment brings me.

I know that it's a lot of emotion to hold, but what I've learned at this advanced age (lol) is that living life to the fullest takes humor, compassion for oneself and others, while adding a healthy sprinkling of decadence in the form of cookies and beautiful wall sconces.

Keep on trucking, my friends. We are swimming in strange waters, but remember to look around and know that there are still things and communities that can help uplift you!

Sending BIG love this Friday and remember to hug your neighbor. Bon week-end!

I help you use Feng Shui as a strategy for transformation, not just design. We shift your energy, refine your environment and bring your next chapter into focus.

Is the honeymoon with Paris over?

Hi Reader, Three years in, I'm discovering the difference between loving a culture and living in it. Paris, ah Paris. I moved back here 3 years ago, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, confident to take on my new world and life. I mean, I spoke pretty fluent French, knew which utensil was used for what course or animal/vegetable/other, and I already had French friends. It was an easy slam dunk, right? Omg, so wrong. As a Feng Shui consultant, I've spent years helping people understand how their...

Before you make your Fall to-do list...

Hi Reader, Is it as hard for you as it is for me to take time off? I'm back from 5 weeks away from my newsletter and blog writing duties. I was travelling for work, taking personal time off to go to the US Open as well as visiting family. Even though I am surrounded daily by a slower paced Parisian rhythm, the NYC hustler in me can't stop muscling her way in. Not thinking about work and you guys was at times a struggle. As I love what I do for a living and it's woven into every fiber of my...

Hi Reader, Do you usually wait for others to give you permission to do something? I don't mean getting permission to go somewhere or to speak to someone. It's a bit sneakier than that. I'm talking about giving yourself permission to take a break. If you're an ambitious woman, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. You have a million things on your daily to-do list that you want to do, finish, fix or start. So sometimes it feels easier when your partner, boss, friend or parent says,...
