The Style & Energy Journal: Wimbledon

Hi Reader,

OK, let’s talk about Wimbledon. Last week was the start of Wimbledon and I have to say I’m always fascinated by this tournament.

Being a defiant immigrant, daughter and New Yorker, it always astounded me that the Wimbledon people got away with demanding that players wear only white to the event. And if I’m honest, WTF was what I thought when I first discovered Wimbledon's requirement.

But now, the more mature and Feng Shui me thinks about Wimbledon more in terms of environment. When I first switched on my first Wimbledon match and I saw that many spectators mirrored this attire, I thought: “Everyone looks so fancy and put together. There must be something very exclusive about this because everyone is wearing white, like they are part of a club.”

All my life, I felt like I didn’t fit in anywhere. I was always on my own and had to figure things out by myself. I was a survivor, always staying in motion, so as not to get caught by the craziness and unrelenting demands of life, real or imagined.

So there I was one afternoon, watching these chic people, mostly clad in all-white, looking very relaxed and amused. I was like, “What’s going on here? I want some of that.”

Personal note from Susan:

A quirky week, but it's always a balance

Not a super exciting week but I live in Paris for the majority of the year so that's always exciting :)

This week was honestly recovering from last week's heatwave. It takes a toll for sure. I was able to get back to some semblance of life, just by being able to move (instead of sitting still in front of fans).

I admired nice Feng Shui in my cardiologist's office, as well as their environmentally friendly design that kept the interior naturally cool, I went back to a normal tempo at the gym, and I was also lucky enough to experience a phenomenon - my friend Jule's chili crisp salad.

You know I was curious just by that name. When she piled on 2 humongous globs of chili sauce I was like, "omg, I'm going to die eating that." But of course I didn't want to be impolite so I ate it and MAN, it was so good and not spicy at all. Just delicious and savory. I'm converted. Do you know about this chili gold and if so, why didn't you tell me sooner???

Lunch was topped off by a lovely café served in this beautiful petit mug by Isabelle Pons. I love my ceramics and love what she does. Yay to creatives doing what they love and spreading joy.

Lastly, I'm in the thick of a phase of home improvements which had me researching drills and going to Ikea. There, I inadvertently stumbled upon what I'm calling Ikea's "Hot Fish." It's like a hot dog but instead of porc, it's fish, a filet o' fish hot dog. I was starving and as it was in-between normal meal hours, there no salmon to be found anywhere. So I dared and was....super pleasantly surprised. Believe it or not, I was raised to love fast food (because we rarely ate it), and as a pescatarian, a weird low-brow indulgence of mine is a McDonald's filet o' fish that I eat maybe once a year. But man, this Ikea fish o' dog was even better! Hit the spot. Call me weird, but remember my blog post above.

I survived the heatwave, as did my plants, although one you can see suffered, but I'm still smiling and here to tell the tale. I heard that heat moved to NYC so please stay cool and safe wherever you are. Would love to hear from you and know what's up in your life, so hit me up!

Sending you cooler energy from Paris. Bon week-end ! xox

Hi Reader, Last week, I received many concerned messages from friends and family in the US. They saw the news headlines about the protests in the streets of France and wondered, is Susan ok? Rest assured, I am ok. There’s definitely something about living in France that keeps you on your toes! One minute you can be admiring the beautiful architecture, enjoying your café and the next minute, there’s a passionate political debate or a “manifestation,” aka protest just winding around the corner....

Is the honeymoon with Paris over?

Hi Reader, Three years in, I'm discovering the difference between loving a culture and living in it. Paris, ah Paris. I moved back here 3 years ago, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, confident to take on my new world and life. I mean, I spoke pretty fluent French, knew which utensil was used for what course or animal/vegetable/other, and I already had French friends. It was an easy slam dunk, right? Omg, so wrong. As a Feng Shui consultant, I've spent years helping people understand how their...

Before you make your Fall to-do list...

Hi Reader, Is it as hard for you as it is for me to take time off? I'm back from 5 weeks away from my newsletter and blog writing duties. I was travelling for work, taking personal time off to go to the US Open as well as visiting family. Even though I am surrounded daily by a slower paced Parisian rhythm, the NYC hustler in me can't stop muscling her way in. Not thinking about work and you guys was at times a struggle. As I love what I do for a living and it's woven into every fiber of my...
