Maybe you're not lazy after all

Hi Reader,

Have you ever had one of those days where you know exactly what you should be doing, but you just...can't?

And it's not because you don't care, but it's because you are feeling unmotivated or simply don't have it in you? If you're anything like me, the judgment probably comes pretty quickly. You tell yourself you need more discipline. You wonder if you're just lazy.

Maybe you even worry that you'll never reach your goals if you keep having days like this.

I know that feeling because I have those days too. The last one was, yesterday. I have a lot of energy naturally. My astrology is a testament to that. I tend to get a lot of things started and mostly, done. But then sometimes, I just…can’t.

For years, I judged those days exactly the same way, but lately, I've started wondering if I've been looking at it all wrong.

What if those days aren't a character flaw?

Personal note from Susan:

Slow but lovely start to August

Parisians have officially started to go on holiday and according to moi, what's left are lovelier, emptier streets and cafes, well if you find an open cafe or restaurant that is. Because of course, bar, restaurant and boutique staff and owners need vacations too! What's left are tourists, lovely tourists and I say that with true affection.

Parisian spots suddenly become English-centric with the few Parisians who stay, acting very cheerful, accommodating friendly, smiley tourists, who are more than happy to tip a smiley service person. It's a win-win!

I've said this before but it's worth saying again. When I learned that the whole of France, and I may dare say most of Europe, takes most of July and August off, I was like, wtf. Notice the lower case, not upper case. I mean, in NYC, we learn very quickly that hustle = survival / validation / enjoyment. You choose.

But even if someone takes time off during the summer, others are working to cover for you, or others not have vacation have questions for you so you are, like, still working.

A friend told me something funny. He's French, working for an international company with many anglophone colleagues. Like some Parisians, he happens to be working in August.

Well, just one week. He was hoping for a slow week, but I kinda chuckled when he marveled at how the non-Parisians from other countries were bombarding him with questions and deadlines since yes, he was one of the working few in the office, and they make no difference between a week in August vs a week in March.

I have not experienced time stopping like this in NYC but I have to say, I'm starting to get used to it. I'm relaxing, even if I'm still working, as I'm on a mostly US schedule. Here's the evidence: I'm strolling emptier streets, having coffee, spending time with friends and their adorable pets, seeing street beauty as always and witnessing all the upgrades and travaux (construction and the like) being done while Parisians are away.

And here's a few random thoughts...

I rediscovered mirabelles, little prunes that are sweet and abundant this time of year. The other day, I took a picture of a bathroom sink at a coffee shop. I always take my phone into bathrooms since I never know what genius awaits me: artwork, gallery or event posters, graffiti, design elements, strangely placed plumbing, or wonderfully designed plumbing like here.

Lastly, but very importantly, I found an alternative to therapy (yes, my therapist is on holiday lol). A ball pit that was made for me. I had a not-so-great week and I found myself somehow plunged in colorful ocean of relaxing balls and care bears. Like who could have even thunk. Relaxation heaven, perfect for August in Paris.

Cheers to hopefully a sleepy August weekend for you! xo

Hi Reader, Last week, I received many concerned messages from friends and family in the US. They saw the news headlines about the protests in the streets of France and wondered, is Susan ok? Rest assured, I am ok. There’s definitely something about living in France that keeps you on your toes! One minute you can be admiring the beautiful architecture, enjoying your café and the next minute, there’s a passionate political debate or a “manifestation,” aka protest just winding around the corner....

Is the honeymoon with Paris over?

Hi Reader, Three years in, I'm discovering the difference between loving a culture and living in it. Paris, ah Paris. I moved back here 3 years ago, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, confident to take on my new world and life. I mean, I spoke pretty fluent French, knew which utensil was used for what course or animal/vegetable/other, and I already had French friends. It was an easy slam dunk, right? Omg, so wrong. As a Feng Shui consultant, I've spent years helping people understand how their...

Before you make your Fall to-do list...

Hi Reader, Is it as hard for you as it is for me to take time off? I'm back from 5 weeks away from my newsletter and blog writing duties. I was travelling for work, taking personal time off to go to the US Open as well as visiting family. Even though I am surrounded daily by a slower paced Parisian rhythm, the NYC hustler in me can't stop muscling her way in. Not thinking about work and you guys was at times a struggle. As I love what I do for a living and it's woven into every fiber of my...
